Beyond Business Cards: How Kindness Builds Better Connections

What does kindness look like in real time?

Not the big, cinematic kind. The everyday kind that shows up quietly—and still changes your whole day.

That’s what we captured at Business Mingle: The Aloha Morning Social.

Instead of leading with titles or elevator pitches, our Emotional Content Story Reporter Yasmine Bari asked one simple question:

“What is one kindness you’ve received lately that you would like to pay forward?”

The answers weren’t rehearsed. They were human. And together, they painted a picture of what a community can feel like when there’s no agenda.

Why we asked a kindness question at a business event

Most people don’t walk into a networking event thinking, I can’t wait to talk about kindness.

They come because they’re building something. They’re trying to stay visible. They’re hoping to meet the right person. And if we’re honest, there’s often a quiet pressure to “make it worth it.”

But the strongest relationships don’t start with a pitch. They start with a feeling: I’m safe here. I’m welcome here. I’m not being evaluated.

That’s why this question mattered. It gave everyone permission to be a person first.

The question that shifted the conversation

There’s something powerful about asking a question that doesn’t require performance.

It invites honesty. It makes space for warmth. And it reminds us that the best networking isn’t about collecting contacts—it’s about creating connections.

And once someone shares a kindness they’ve received, something shifts: you stop scanning the crowd for opportunity and start noticing the people in front of you.

A snapshot of the kindness shared

Rather than retell every story, here’s a glimpse of the kinds of moments people named—the ones that make you pause and think, I want to be that person for someone else.

1. The out-of-the-blue phone call

One person shared how friends will call even after months of silence—and when they pick up, it feels like “time stood still.”

That kind of check-in is a quiet form of love. It says: I remember you. And it’s a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful outreach is the simplest.

2. The compliment from a stranger

A small compliment—“I like your shoes”—can change the tone of an entire day.

It’s not about flattery. It’s about noticing. And once you’ve received that kind of boost, you want to give it back.

3. “Have an amazing day.”

A tiny message on a cup: “Have an amazing day.”

It’s such a small thing, yet it can land like permission to breathe. Permission to hope. Permission to feel like you matter.

4. “Just because” flowers

A friend sent flowers out of the blue.

No milestone. No ask. Just a gesture that said, I’m thinking of you.

And that’s how kindness multiplies: one unexpected act becomes an invitation to do the same for someone else.

5. Practical help when you’re stuck

Another business owner shared how someone offered to help set up a Google Business page when they felt completely lost.

This is generosity in its most usable form—support that restores confidence and removes friction.

6. Mentorship in motion

Kindness also showed up as teaching:

  • A casual tennis rally that turned into free lessons

  • Website tips shared “without asking for business”

That last part matters. When help comes without strings, it builds trust.

7. Warmth at the event

One person shared that the kindness they received that day was simply sitting with someone warm—building connection instead of “floating through” the event.

If you’ve ever walked into a gathering and felt like you didn’t know where to land, you know how meaningful that is.

Warmth is a skill. And it’s one we can all practice.

What this kind of networking builds (and why it lasts)

Kindness isn’t a “nice extra.” It’s the foundation.

When kindness shows up first, people relax. They stop bracing. They start listening.

And that’s where trust grows—the kind that leads to real collaboration, referrals, and relationships that last beyond a single event.

Because when someone feels seen, they remember you. Not as a business card. As a person.

A gentle ripple you can start today

If someone crossed your mind while reading this, consider it a nudge:

  • Send the text.

  • Make the call.

  • Offer the tip.

  • Give the compliment.

Not because you need anything.

Just because you noticed.

Let’s keep the ripple going

What’s a small gesture that instantly makes you feel seen?

If you’re open to sharing, I’d love to read your answer.
